Microsoft Securing its Position with Cybersecurity Investments

Microsoft Corporation has come a long way in the last few years. It has transformed itself into a diversified business with a leading market share in several fast-growing industries such as cloud computing, social media, video communication, and video gaming.
Today, the company is focused on expanding its footprint in the cybersecurity industry as well, which is likely to improve Microsoft’s long-term earnings potential in more ways than one
Microsoft announced the acquisition of ReFirm Labs, a device vulnerability management and firmware security analysis company, for an undisclosed amount. Although some businesses have opted to embrace cloud computing, cyber threats have emerged as a major obstacle to the continued growth of this industry. That is because some businesses have decided to use traditional inhouse computing and data storage facilities to ensure the safety of their business secrets and other important data.

New trade data exchange to allow better tracking of cargo, optimise supply chain logistics

Logistics and shipping firms will be able to securely share more data on the movement of goods when a new trade data exchange is rolled out in 2022, enabling them to optimise operations.

From pilots conducted so far, the Singapore Trade Data Exchange (SGTraDex) is expected to unlock more than S$200 million in value annually for the supply chain ecosystem, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat said on Tuesday (Jul 13).

The movement of goods is often marked by “significant” inefficiencies such as depot and warehouse congestion, multiple shipping forms requiring similar information and inaccurate tracking of orders on the buyers’ end, said Mr Heng.

Describing it as a breakthrough, he said SGTraDex will allow stakeholders to “plug and play” and exchange information with other firms in a secure manner. Data that would have been previously unavailable or difficult to obtain, such as real-time cargo location, will also become easier to access.

The pilots showed that SGTraDex will help to strengthen the financing integrity of trade flows, optimise logistics functions across supply chain partners and improve visibility on transactions, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) said in a media release.

India’s cybersecurity plan to include sovereignty, set deliverables for entities

India’s upcoming National Cybersecurity Strategy will have an element of sovereignty, and it will set deliverables for enterprises to address gaps in India’s ecosystem.
It is like a guideline which addresses the entire ecosystem. So it will address cyber crimes, capacity building, audits, research and developments, and all aspects will be addressed. A number of deliverables will be there.
The strategy will follow the principles of Common But Differentiated Responsibility (CBDR), which puts the onus of cybersecurity on all involved parties, including corporates, users, academia and governments. The policy, which is awaiting approval at the cabinet, will make changes to the 2013 version and will be “futuristic”, while addressing the “entire ecosystem” involved.

Non-profit Global Business Alliance launches supply chain subsidiary.

The Global Business Alliance, a non-profit devoted to raising foreign investment in U.S. industry, announced Tuesday a subsidiary to help international companies manage supply chain concerns.

GBA Sentinel will assist international companies operating in the U.S. that face a growing understanding of risk from upstream partners in their supply chains and an increasingly complex regulatory space – both by giving advice and by subsidizing a supply chain management toolkit.

Small businesses are less likely to have the resources, experience and infrastructure to engage with rigorous cybersecurity requirements. GBA represents many sizable, truly global firms –  and yet supply chains are one area where large businesses can be at a similar security disadvantage. The more vendors that feed into a final product or a business process, the more potential weak links exist along the way.
